Yellowstone Art Museum – Celebrating Creativity in the Contemporary West
The Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM) is Montana’s premier destination for experiencing the art and culture of the contemporary West. Its spacious, light-filled galleries host a rotating lineup of exhibitions that range from bold, cutting-edge works to pieces that honor the region’s artistic heritage. Each visit offers something new, from thought-provoking modern installations to intimate explorations of local history through art.

The museum holds the largest public collection of works by cowboy artist and author Will James, offering an unparalleled look at his life and creative legacy. The collection includes original drawings, paintings, manuscripts, and personal artifacts that capture his deep connection to the Western way of life. James’s art is celebrated for its authenticity, portraying cowboys, horses, and ranch life with a storyteller’s eye and the detail of someone who lived the work he depicted. Visitors can see everything from lively ink sketches to richly colored illustrations, along with rare writings that reveal his dual talent as both a visual artist and a chronicler of the American West.

The museum’s permanent collection features more than 7,300 works, with a focus on artists who have lived and worked in Montana or been inspired by its landscapes and people. Visitors can see everything from vibrant oil paintings and striking photography to intricate sculptures, mixed-media creations, and masterful works on paper. Highlights include the Rufus Z. and Mary Jane Zuckert Print Collection, showcasing fine prints from around the world, and the Poindexter Collection, which preserves the legacy of influential Montana contemporary artists. Western landscapes, Native American artistry, and experimental contemporary pieces often share space, creating a rich and varied visual experience.
Beyond its exhibitions, YAM is known for the Visible Vault, where guests can peek into the museum’s storage area to view works not currently on display and learn about how collections are cared for. The museum also offers workshops, artist talks, family programs, and community events, making it a lively hub for creative expression.
