Pictograph Caves
Pictograph Cave State Park
Pictograph Cave State Park offers a fascinating window into Billings’ ancient past. Designated a National Historic Landmark, the site features three caves: Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost. Each cave features preserved rock art created by early peoples thousands of years ago. More than 100 figures, painted between 200 and 2,000 years ago, depict animals, warriors and even rifles, offering insight into the lives and stories of those who once called this region home.

Visitors can start at the interpretive center to learn about the archaeology of the site, then follow a short loop trail to explore the caves and view the pictographs up close. Binoculars make the faint red, white and black images easier to see. Archaeological digs here uncovered more than 30,000 artifacts, including tools, jewelry and weapons, making it one of the most important excavation sites in Montana.

Beyond its history, the park is also a peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors, with opportunities for birdwatching, picnicking and taking in the scenic beauty of the surrounding landscape.
