Scavenger Hunts
Scavenger Hunts
Embark on a city-wide scavenger hunt that takes you from the Rimrocks to the river, solving clues, learning about the region’s heritage and history, and capturing memories along the way.
Note to parents: keep the clues (and secret locations) hidden. Otherwise, it’s not much fun for the kids!

Starting Point: Skypoint in Downtown Billings
First, take a group selfie under the canopy and strike your best “sky-high” pose. Then, read the first clue.
Clue: “From here, follow the sound of the tracks to where a depot once welcomed the West.”
Stop 1: The Historic Billings Depot
Snap a photo with a train mural or the building itself. Find the year the depot opened and write it down.
Clue: “Where music and art flow as freely as the Yellowstone River — and sometimes hang on the walls.”

Stop 2: Yellowstone Art Museum
Count how many bison appear in the artwork outside the building. Do your best impression of an artist painting “en plein air” and get it on camera.
Clue: “Climb to where the city meets the sky for your next view.”
Stop 3: Swords Park & Skyline Trail
From the overlook, take a panorama that captures both the city and the Yellowstone River. Find the interpretive sign about the Rimrocks and record one fact you didn’t know.
Clue: “Head to the heart of the city where the water is still and the geese like to gather.”

Stop 4: Riverfront Park (Lake Josephine)
Spot at least 3 different types of birds (or plants) and snap a quick pic of each. Skip a rock or try to. One attempt per team member.
Clue: “Your final stop is a roaring reminder of Montana’s wild past.”
Final Stop: Western Heritage Center
Find the grizzly bear exhibit (or photo) and get a team picture with it. Share your favorite fact you learned during the hunt. Turn in all your answers and photos to complete the quest!
Extras for Bonus Points:
Find a Billings mural and stand in front of it for a photo. Buy a local snack or drink to enjoy along the way. Spot a license plate from a state other than Montana.
