Rivers & Lakes

Let The Adventure Flow

Water is more than a feature on a map when you’re in Billings. It’s a big Montana experience that flows through every vacation. Rivers roll beneath towering sandstone cliffs and lakes glimmer beneath big blue skies.

The yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River cuts right through Billings like a ribbon of wild beauty, its shimmering waters reflecting big Montana skies. On calm stretches, especially between Blue Creek and Coulson Park, you can drift past sandbars where pelicans gather and watch herons stalk the shallows. Outfitters stand ready to set you up with a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard so you can glide past cottonwood groves, spot deer along the banks, and soak in the ever-changing scenery.

White Water Adventures

When you’re ready to trade serenity for splash, local rafting companies like Absaroka River Adventures,  Adventure Whitewater and Yellowstone River Adventures will lead you into the rolling Class II and III rapids. These aren’t monster rapids built to intimidate. They’re the fun kind, where waves slap the boat, laughter bounces off canyon walls, and you emerge grinning and soaked. Along the way, watch for osprey diving for fish or glimpses of mountain peaks on the horizon.

FISHING THE STILLWATER

The Stillwater Creek winds out of the Beartooth Mountains with a rhythm as steady as its name suggests. Here, the water tumbles over smooth stones, curves around quiet bends shaded by cottonwoods, and hides trout in glass-clear pools. Paddle its gentle stretches or cast a line while listening to the creek chatter over riffles. Between catches, you might spot a mink darting along the bank or a bald eagle tracing lazy circles overhead.

LAKE ELMO STATE PARK

For a laid-back day in the sun, Lake Elmo State Park has it all, including paddleboards skimming across the water, kids splashing in the swim areas, and anglers casting from the pier. Spread out a blanket on the grass, toss a frisbee under the big blue sky, or wander the shoreline trails where red-winged blackbirds call from the reeds.

Splash And Slide

When summer heat hits, Oasis Waterpark is pure adrenaline and laughter. Zip down twisting slides, duck under splash zones, and try Montana’s only WaveSurfer ride, where wipeouts are just part of the fun. It’s the kind of place where giggles mix with the sound of rushing water and sunscreen-slicked kids race back in line for one more turn.

Paddle Safety

Even if you are a skilled swimmer or boater, Montana waterways often can present unique challenges and circumstances. We encourage all visitors to use normal safety precautions, such as life vests, and consult a local guide if you’re unsure of your ability to safely navigate the waters in and around Billings.
