Slothies on the Rimrocks: Winston’s Favorite Photo Spots in Billings

September 2, 2025

Winston on Rims

As a social media influencer and local celebrity, I’ve become pretty skilled at taking slothies (or as you humans might call them, “selfies”) that rack up likes on my Instagram. So for all my loyal fans, I’ve compiled a shortlist of my top spots for photos in and around Billings—because a great picture is nice, but great scenery is even better. Fair warning: some of these locations involve hiking, so if you’re able, I recommend bringing a human to carry you… like I do.

Pompeys Pillar National Monument

A towering sandstone outcrop overlooking the Yellowstone River—aka instant “wow” backdrop. Captain William Clark left his famous signature here, and I was strongly advised not to leave mine (illegal and also rude).

Four Dances Recreation Area

Rimrocks views, river views, and the kind of cliffside scenery that makes your camera work overtime. There’s a short footpath to the rim overlook (watch your step, humans).

Swords Rimrock Park

If you want Rimrocks scenery without a big commitment, this is an easy win: beautiful overlooks and paved trail time. It’s basically “big views, little effort,” which is my love language.

Zimmerman Park

Another top-of-the-Rims favorite with wide-open views and lots of trail options. Come for the scenery, stay because you accidentally turned your “quick walk” into a whole adventure.

Norm Schoenthal Island via Riverfront Park

When you want river scenery and wildlife without leaving town, this is the move. Trails, trees, water, and prime “nature documentary” energy (I recommend narrating your walk in a whisper).

Beartooth Scenic Highway

This one is peak “sit in the van, look incredible”—my specialty. The drive climbs to 10,947 feet at Beartooth Pass, and the scenery is so dramatic it basically edits your photos for you.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Scenic trail + ancient rock art = double the bragging rights. It’s a short loop with big “how is this real?” energy.

Final sloth tip

This list should get you well on your way to social media stardom. But the quickest route to greatness is still a stop at ZooMontana for a selfie–slothie combo with your favorite two-toed icon (me).
