- CAE, President/CEO
Billings Chamber of Commerce/Convention and Visitors Bureau
I am the President and CEO of the Billings Chamber of Commerce/Convention & Visitors Bureau and the manager of the Tourism Business Improvement District. The Chamber/CVB’s focus is to: promote Billings as a preferred destination for visitors, business travelers and sporting events; lead the community in local, state and federal issues impacting business and our quality of life; and to provide opportunities for membership as they relate to education, networking and value added services. The mission of the Tourism BID is simply to put heads in beds. I currently serve as the President of the Montana Association of Chamber Executives, and am an active board member on the MSU-Billings College of Technology National Advisory Board, the Big Sky Economic Development Corporation Board, Montana Chamber of Commerce Board, and Better Billings Foundation Board. I was the President and CEO of the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau prior to coming to Billings where I led a team to develop statewide legislation implementing a tourism promotion assessment to grow tourism funding in communities throughout Washington. I was also part of the leadership team that successfully developed and secured resources to expand Spokane’s convention facilities by $96 million. I have a B.A. degree in Communication Arts from the University of West Florida.
- Alex Tyson
- Executive Director
Billings Convention & Visitors Bureau
The CVB Executive Director position focuses on the promotion and marketing of Billings: Montana’s Trailhead, as a destination for leisure, group and business travel. Alex Tyson has been with the Billings Chamber/Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) since 2007. Hired as the Community Relations Director, she was promoted to Vice President in 2009 and became the CVB Executive Director in 2012.
Alex appreciates and understands the significance of tourism to the Billings community and local economy. Born in Yosemite National Park, Alex was a “National Park Service kid,” so to speak, spending 15 summers in Yellowstone National Park. Her first jobs included scooping ice cream for YNP visitors at the Hamilton Store in Mammoth and working for the Public Affairs Office and Park photographer. Welcoming people to Yellowstone and watching them enjoy their national park experience was a highlight of her teens and early 20’s.
A graduate of Montana State University Billings focusing on Mass and Organizational Communications, Alex is a past president of the MSU Billings Alumni Advisory Board and served as a board member or volunteer for several other area organizations including Parents, Let’s Unite For Kids, MSU Billings Foundation, March of Dimes and Faith Chapel.
Prior to working at the Chamber/CVB, Alex anchored ‘Montana This Morning’ at the local CBS affiliate, KTVQ, for nearly a decade and worked as a photographer, reporter and producer for Evening Post Publishing Company. Alex has lived in Billings for 20 years and is proud to call the community home. She is married to her husband, Calvin. They have two very active boys who help make up what they lovingly refer to as the Tyson Tornado.
- Kelly McCandless
- Leisure Sales Manager
Born and raised in Billings, Kelly earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Mass Communication and Organizational Communication from Montana State University - Billings. Her career with the Billings Chamber/CVB began in 2008 and evolved from Guest Services and Visitor Information Center management to her current role as the Leisure Travel Market Manager and the Communications Manager. Kelly is proud to be one of Destination Marketing Association International’s 30 Under 30 for 2012. Additionally, her efforts in marketing Billings produced the website you are browsing, an active Facebook following, vibrant and fluid advertising campaigns encouraging travel to Billings, and a variety of dynamic tools for both planning and facilitating your visit to Montana’s Trailhead.
Appropriately, Kelly has a passion for travel, whether she is the one traveling or if she is assisting others in their travels to Billings. She feels fortunate to live in a town she loves with her husband, daughter and terribly spoiled pooch, Diego.
