Outsiders: It’s Time to Do Our Thing in Billings, Montana’s Trailhead
March 29, 2024

The warmer weather and sunshine are here, and that always puts a bright smile on the faces of outsiders like us. Because it’s time to embrace that pure, unencumbered Montana adventure we’ve been craving.

More than 47 miles of hiking and biking trails in and around Billings are a great place to start. The trail system atop the Rimrocks – ancient sandstone bluffs surrounding downtown Billings and offering postcard views of the distant Montana terrain – connects Swords Rimrocks Park and Zimmerman Park and is one of the local favorites for a leisurely hike or ride. If you’re interested in exploring even further, check out our complete trail map.

The summer months also bring some of the finest fly fishing in the country to the surface. Spend an afternoon in peaceful solitude casting your line into the Stillwater River or Bighorn River. These waterways – along with the Yellowstone River – are also great for rafting and kayaking for a memorable adventure. Read more about all the ways you can explore authentic Montana on the water.

When the sun sets, the real excitement begins. Billings plays host to an enviable lineup of live entertainment and events all summer long. Enjoy musical acts at the Alive After Five concert series every Thursday from 5 to 8 pm in June and July. On the flip side, wake up with the sun at the Big Sky International Balloon Rally at Amend Park as hot air balloons take flight into big blue Montana skies. The 2024 rally will take place July 25-28. Browse our complete list of summer events and entertainment.

And of course no matter the time of year, your visit to Billings isn’t complete without a few stops along the Billings Brew Trail, boasting nine breweries, three distilleries, a cider mill and a winery. While you’re out there, fuel up at some of our favorite restaurants, including James Beard Award nominees Walkers Grill and Marble Table.

That sound you’re hearing right now is your inner outsider calling. So plan your trip to Billings today.
