Winston’s Tips for Writing the Perfect Letter to Santa

When people come to visit me at ZooMontana, they’re full of questions, but during the holiday season, a few of those questions come up more often.

“Can you share your recipe for sweet potato casserole?”

“Do gloves or mittens work better for your claws?”

This is one of my favorites: “Winston, you’re such an amazing writer. Could you help me write a letter to Santa Claus?”

If your name isn’t Pabu the Red Panda, I’m always happy to help, so here are a few tips you can use to craft a message the big guy can’t ignore.

Tip #1: Handwritten Letters Always Make a Good Impression

It’s never been easier to reach Santa.

You can send him an email. You can shoot him DMs on his social channels.

But, nothing compares to an old-fashioned, handwritten letter! It just feels more personal, and that matters. Also, Santa’s a big fan of drawings, and those are way easier to add when you’re working on paper.

If you’re in need of artistic inspiration, visit the Yellowstone Art Museum and check out this winter’s ArtWalk in downtown Billings.

Tip #2: Have Your Wish List Ready Before You Begin to Write

It’s a commitment to write a letter to Santa already, but it will take you even longer if you don’t have your wish list at the ready.

Before you sit down at your desk or kitchen table, make sure you’ve done your homework… have a few gift ideas in mind!
This year, I’m asking for sweet potatoes, brewery gift cards (so I can “hike” the Billings Brew Trail!), and a new hammock for my home.

Tip #3: Let Him Know Why You Deserve to Be On the ‘Nice’ List

I let Santa know my friends who deserve to be on the nice list each year, but I save the arguments for myself for my letter.

Don’t sell yourself short! Give him multiple reasons you deserve all the gifts he can give. Here’s how I’m promoting myself:

“Santa, I’ve been really good this year. I know I’m well behaved every year, but I really outdid myself this time. I gave out full-size candy bars for Halloween, voted in municipal elections, and I finally picked up yoga. And yes, I’m a natural.”

Tip #4: Compliment the Reindeer

Santa loves all animals (one of the many reasons he and I are besties), but he’s got a soft spot for his reindeer. Thanks to these guys, he can deliver gifts all over the world in one night.

I couldn't even cross a department store parking lot in that time. That’s why I do plenty of my holiday shopping at local businesses, but that’s besides the point.

Show some love to the reindeer, and you won’t have to fear any coal in your stocking.

Tip #5: Don’t Be Afraid to Bribe Him

Sometimes, a small, tasty bribe can go a long way to ensure Santa delivers the goods.

Sincerely,
Winston Jeffrey Hoffman
