The Time I Mistook Romaine for Romance

When Visit Billings asked me to write a post about couples’ getaway weekends for those looking for a bit of romance, I immediately began writing about that leafy green stuff I love to eat. Turns out that’s romaine, not romance.

Well, now that I know what romance actually is, it’s not really my thing. But here goes: couples’ getaway weekends.

Once you get here and settle in, I highly suggest stopping at Doc Harper’s for a martini – it will make this whole romance thing a little less awkward in my opinion. From there, it’s on to experience one of my favorite things – eating!

While I prefer any place that serves sweet potatoes or apple slices, I’m told humans prefer a more diverse menu. Check out Buffalo Block Prime Steakhouse at the Rex. A century-old Billings icon that’s seen its fair share of Billings history first-hand, the Rex on Montana Avenue was a favorite haunt of Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane and Will James.

Humans here in Montana’s Trailhead rave about Walkers Grill. The chef was recently nominated for a James Beard award and I heard he loves Montana grown vegetables almost as much as I do! I can’t wait until I’m old enough to grow a James Beard – especially one that would be nominated for an award!

Another local favorite is called TEN. Serving traditional American cuisine, with unique international flavors, TEN's menu offers a variety of options including delicious steaks and fresh sea food. They might have sweet potatoes, too.

At this point, I’d be ready for a nice 18-hour nap, but you can plan to catch a late evening movie at the Art House Pub & Cinema or Babcock Theatre.

After you’ve had a good, long rest, start the next day by visiting one of downtown Billings’ breakfast spots like Stella’s Kitchen and Bakery, Bernie’s Diner or Sassy Biscuit. On an unrelated note, Sassy Biscuit is also the title of my yet-to-be-written memoir.

I have a tough time recommending this next part because I am a sloth after all. But Billings is home to 48 miles worth of trails. Grab some coffee and head out for beautiful walk along the sandstone cliffs. Zimmerman and Swords Park offer incredible view of the city and surrounding areas. On a clear day, five mountain ranges can be seen from the trail: Pryor, Big Horn, Bull, Crazy and Absaroka-Beartooth.

My friend Fierca, who is a Canada Lynx and lives here at ZooMontana, is a big art fan and suggested that I include some information about Billings’ galleries, museums and shopping.

Visit the gallery of world renowned artist, Harry Koyama. Take in Mr. Koyama’s breath-taking impressions on the American west. Next, head over to the Yellowstone Art Museum. The Yellowstone Art Museum sparks imagination and curiosity through rotating exhibits and collections of art, significantly on Montana and its surrounding regions.

Pick up a key to the Visible Vault for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into where and how art is stored when it’s not on display in the museum's exhibit. Finally, continue exploring the local art scene by visiting Toucan Gallery and Boutique for art and shopping!

That would certainly be enough activity for me, but if you’re still up for some adventure check out the Billings Brew Trail. This is actually one of my favorite Billings activities, and I actually wrote another blog post about the time Bert the Bison and I hit the trail.

After another good night’s rest and before hitting the open road, experience an elevated brunch at Bin 119, or stop and see me and my animal friends at ZooMontana. I can’t promise visiting me will add to the romance of your experience, but I am a pretty awesome entertainer. Also, don’t forget it’s BYOR – Bring Your Own Romaine.
